The Boxcar Children, pre-Boxcar

Holy cats: seventy years after its debut, the Boxcar Children series is getting a prequel. Newbery Medalist Patricia MacLachlan (the author of Sarah Plain and Tall) has written The Boxcar Children Beginning: The Aldens of Fair Meadow Farm, due out September 1st.
The prequel will provide what MacLachlan calls “the beginning before the beginning” of Gertrude Chandler Warner’s popular series, which currently boasts more than 50 million copies in print worldwide. I really wish they'd gone with cover art that wasn't so deadly dull (maybe something like this?), but that's the least of my concerns about this book. I mean... the Alden kids are orphans, right? Is this going to be the story of how their parents die? Because I can't see myself recommending that as fun back-to-school reading.
