Megan McCafferty

While there is little to distinguish Megan McCafferty’s Jessica Darling novels from the slew of other young adult diary-style novels, they are perfectly respectable entries in an enjoyable and rapidly expanding genre. If I were stack up the heroines of these books based on their charm, I would place Jess Darling somewhere above the heroines of Catherine Clark’s Truth or Dairy books and Louise Rennison’s Georgia Nicolson series, but somewhere below the heroines of Tanuja Desai Hidler’s Born Confused or Meg Cabot’s The Princess Diaries. There’s only so much self-absorbed teen angst I can take, but if you’re in the mood for that kind of thing this is a fine choice.
