William Goldman

If you've only ever seen the film version of The Princess Bride, you owe to yourself to check out the totally kickass book it was based upon. My copy (with the complete title: The Princess Bride: A Hot Fairy Tale) has this blurb on the back: "What happens when the most beautiful girl in the world marries the handsomest prince in the world and he turns out to be a son of a bitch?" While this description is not quite accurate (Humperdinck, far from being the handsomest prince in the world, is described as being shaped like a barrel, with a crablike walk) it should give you an idea of the book's tone, which is a bit racier than the film version but just as charming.

Note: Mr. Goldman has won several awards for screenwriting, including two Academy Awards for All the President's Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
