Jean Craighead George has written many interesting, lofty-minded, award-winning novels. Of these, my favorite is
My Side of the Mountain, a beautiful story about a young boy who runs away from home to live in the woods in the Catskill Mountains. As naturalist writing goes, it's about, oh... a thousand times more inspiring and entertaining than anything Thoreau ever wrote.
Note: While
My Side of the Mountain is fictional, the information it presents is accurate. As a child, George's entomologist father taught her how to survive in the wilderness, and at age thirteen she was given a falcon to train by her brothers, who were some of the first falconers in the United States.
