Anne Lindbergh

For an author with such famous parents (not to mention a juvenile fantasy award named after her) you don’t hear much about Anne Spencer Lindbergh. Still, she wrote several excellent middle-school-age fantasy novels, including The People in Pineapple Place and The Prisoner of Pineapple Place—two novels about a street that moves around the country, where no one ever changes. Ms. Morrow died of cancer in 1993.

Note: The magician who controls Pineapple Place, Mr. Sweeny, was an isolationist who began moving the street around in response to the Second World War. He’s a creepy, megalomaniacal figure, and I’ve always wondered if that was a dig at Charles Lindbergh, who also held isolationist views.

Aftertaste:
Er... the idea of the Pineapple Place series is pretty creepy, but Lindbergh handles it without any Anne Rice-style melodrama.

Availability:
The Pineapple Place books have recently been re-released. You'll have to hunt for the rest of her books.
