But the heroine doesn't die!

According to The New York Times, a long-lost Edith Wharton play has recently surfaced. The Shadow of a Doubt was supposed to be staged in New York in 1901, but for unknown reasons the production was abandoned and the play forgotten. Wharton apparently re-worked some of the play's themes into her 1907 novel The Fruit of the Tree, but even she seemed to content to let the play die a quiet death: there was no mention of it in her 1934 memoir.
