An ongoing mystery

The Atlantic recently posted an article about the long history of mostly-terrible Wizard of Oz movies, exploring why such rich source material has only resulted in one decent film. The article is full of interesting facts: I had no idea that The Wizard of Oz is the most-watched movie in history, or that there were already nearly a half-dozen Oz films (all duds) before it came out in 1939. Personally, I have a soft spot for the creeptastic 1985 movie Return to Oz, but even I can accept it's not exactly a prime example of the cinematic art.
