Elizabeth Peters is one of the three pen names used by the author known as MPM. (She has also written books under her real name, Barbara G. Mertz, and the name Barbara Michaels. However, we are only recommending her Peters stuff, since we haven’t read any of the gothic suspense novels she’s written under the Michaels name and--let’s be honest--we’ll probably
never read any of the non-fiction texts on ancient Egypt she’s written under her own name.) Peters has a Ph.D. in Egyptology, and her knowledge of Egypt is clearly evident in her series of highly entertaining mysteries set in the early part of the 20th century and featuring the archeologist/amateur detective Amelia Peabody.
