...by announcing over the weekend that beloved wizarding icon Dumbledore was gay!GO, J.K. ROWLING! Hell, if your books are going to be banned left and right anyway, why not strike a blow for equality while you're at it?

Holy moly. But, yeah--I'd say it was brave of her, but the kind of people who are going to be offended by this news pretty much hate her anyway, so that kind of limits the "bold move"-ness of it all.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is the timing. I would like to think that if I had known about it up front, it wouldn't have mattered. After the fact, though, it seems like she didn't trust us to accept Dumbledore for who he really was.

I think the kindest explanation for such a belated announcement is that she didn't want Dumbledore's sexuality to become more of an issue than the book as a whole. Or perhaps she just didn't want to deal with the hullabaloo her announcement would cause until the initial book seven craze had died off...?
The UNkindest explanation, of course, is that she's trying to distract people from talking about how underwhelming that ending was.

Salon.com has a really good article about this. Their theory is that J.K. Rowling has spent so much time telling these stories that she just can't quite hit the brakes.
Okay, the above statement is sliiiiightly paraphrased, but that's pretty much the point.
