Jeff Smith, author of the completely awesome
Bone series, is the comic book world’s answer to
J.K. Rowling: the kind of writer who is so staggeringly entertaining that almost anybody, regardless of their feelings about comic books, will enjoy their work.
Bone is an epic and award-winning humor/fantasy/romance series that Smith self-published for 12 years. It ended in the summer of 2004, and the entire series has been collected in a massive one-volume edition that is absolutely worth the cover price. I mean it--we are talking fantasy on the scale of Tolkien. Only readable. And with girls in it. Seriously:
buy this book.
Note: The collected
Bone was our number one pick for “Best Books Published in 2004” list, despite facing some pretty stiff competition.
Aftertaste:Warning to grammar freaks: the individual
Bone graphic novels feature some pretty ugly spelling and word usage errors, but most of them seem to have been fixed in the collected edition.
Availability:Limited. And please, buy this one from your local comic shop, folks. They could use the money.

This comic book is AMAZING. Totally worth the cover price. I hear it's being released by Scholastic via school book fairs, too...

It is absolutely required that everone who can speak english read this graphic novel. And once it's translated to other languages, people of those languages as well.

Scholastic has already released book one in the Bone series "Out from Boneville", and in color. The price is about $10.00, but according to my daughters, quite worth the price. They keep checking the book store for the next installment, "The Great Cow Race". I also found it a pretty entertaining read.
